The capital of the last Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, Thimphu is a stronghold of traditional Bhutanese art, architecture and culture.
Thimphu is Bhutan’s largest city and is just an hour’s drive from Paro. Even though Thimphu is considered as the country’s most modern city, it has retained the unique character of a Bhutanese town. Here, an array of restaurants and internet cafés sit alongside old fortresses, monasteries and forests. Thimphu is also the only national capital city in the world to not have any traffic lights.

One of the most beautiful of Bhutan's valleys, it was also historically the centre of two of the most important trade routes to Tibet.
Today the new road to Phuentsholing on the Indian border runs through the valley, amid a patchwork of rice, paddies, wheat fields, trout-filled streams, and scattered settlements.
Here the Paro Chu (Chu means River) flows south from its watershed in the Chomolahri range. Above it in a rocky outcrop of the sleepy hillside stands the Paro Dzong, at an altitude of just over 7000 feet, overlooking both sides of the valley this dzong was historically one of Bhutan's strongest and most strategic fortresses. Before the rebuilding of the Tashi Chho Dzong at Thimphu, it was also the seat of the National Assembly.
Beautiful Punakha has been inextricably linked with momentous occasions in Bhutanese history.
Two of Bhutan’s most prized rivers, the Pho and Mo Chu, also converge in the city where at their confluence stands the mighty Punakha Dzong. These rivers are also home to one of the last surviving populations of the critically endangered white-bellied herons. Further recognised as one of the warmest valleys in Bhutan, Punakha too offers explorers spectacular Himalaya views, exhilarating treks and serene temples.
The route from the capital city of Thimphu to Punakha is quite spectacular and takes travellers over the renowned Dochu La Pass, showcasing an array of interesting monuments as well as awe-inspiring views of the great Himalaya mountain range. Driving down from Dochu La towards Punakha, explorers can also discover the Royal Botanical Park, where an excellent collection of Himalaya plants and good birding sites can be found.
